This post is a HUGE pat on the back for Brant and I. When we lived outside of Kansas City attending graduate school, we found it hard to cook and eat at home. Time, schedules, projects, our suburban location, etc kept luring us into the fast food joints and restaurants that surrounded us. We were literally spending hundreds of dollars a month on top of grocery money I was spending.

I have to report that in the last 2 weeks, we have used our bank card only twice to dine out!!! Thats 40 bucks rather than 150!

I was asked to make some drawings for an interior design project (thanks Meg!) and thought I'd share one of the final drawings. I really enjoy researching a topic when I make drawings...if possible. This project dealt with women and sports, so I went to the internet and looked up historic women's sports. This lead me to this famous image of two women boxing. I learned a little about these two particular women and their boxing match on March 7, 1912. I also learned a bit about women's boxing and the fact that it's taken over 200 years for it to be taken seriously. I'm not sure if I'm correct, but the London Olympics of 2012 might finally include it as a sport rather than an exhibition. Please make comments if I'm completely wrong about any of those facts...I can take a hit! :)

No, we didn't trade Nate in for a little pony, he was just not available for the photo so we grabbed the closest thing...thought nobody would notice. :)

It's been a wonderful year full of new experiences. In July we moved into our first home in Donnelly and it has been so amazing to live in such nice, big house and a beautiful location. Nate is mending very well from his accident last spring and Jack is growing like a weed, running, climbing and speaking in his own language.

We wish everyone a beautiful holiday season.

Autumn Makes Me Sick...

homesick that is. When I lived in Kansas for grad school I would miss Idaho, specifically the family farm, immensely. And now, living in Idaho, during the fall I miss Kansas like crazy. Something about the season turns me to mush and I get really sentimental and teary. I remember making my commute to Lawrence when we were in Kansas, crying part of the way. It was during one fall that I worked on a photo postcard project in a little town called Desoto Kansas. I spotted the most beautiful old home and asked the owner if I could shoot images with his home in the background. He said yes and also gave us a tour of the restored home, which was amazingly generous of him. This produced a collection I call "Writing Home: A Postcard Project." I remember that time in my life so fondly and maybe that's part of what makes fall feel just right.

Change is Good

Today is my last day at my current job. (I say current because I seem to be changing employment quite regularly) I've been working as a manager of a storage unit in our small town for almost 5 months and when a new owner bought the business, he decided to use a 24 hour kiosk rather than a human. I actually don't blame him, I think as a customer it makes sense. (And I love gadgets) It has just been a good, sensible job because it's full time AND I can take my 14 month old son along.

So....goodbye day job. I'm actually excited for this change. Winter is here and I hope to work in the studio, apply to some shows, visit family, ski a lot, and take some part time hours with my friends at The Fogglifter Cafe in McCall. (I love that place!)

Hatched ink and charcoal. Inspired by a photograph I bought a while back. The tree limbs were fantastic and I had to spend some time with them. I'm now working on the next drawing along this line. Somehow these camera mechanisms sneak in as I draw, merging themselves into faces, etc. I keep coming back to the idea of the head being a camera...just a dark box imaging the world as it goes by. Being a photographer, I instinctively look at the composition of things and my drawings reflect this automatic 'camera eye.' I also see that with the convenience of digital cameras, phones, etc., people are facially connected to a lens almost constantly...recording the world in mind and machine. But what if the earliest cameras, the large and cumbersome ones had been so common in daily life? That's where I'm headed...

Go Suck on a Wet Sock

Today it arrived...that shitty part of winter that nobody likes. It's sneaky. The sun is out, and the sky is clear, but there is the most horrible icey wind. The renegade long parts of my bangs are dangling in my face because that stupid wind loosened them from the shorter ones. Jack doesn't like being indoors all day and when I let him loose outside, he dashed to the nearest puddle and came back shreiking in pain from the cold socks and shoes. I have him back in the office now and just noticed that he was sucking the water out of his wet sock like we all used to do with the wash cloth in the tub.

Ah winter with a toddler. What a change.

Jack Louis Meckel

Our son, Jack Louis Meckel was born August 25 at 7:28am. He weighed 6lbs 10oz and was 19 ½ inches long.

I started having contractions at about 11pm on the 24th and woke Brant at 1:30am. We timed them for about an hour and they averaged about 3 minutes between contractions. After calling the hospital to see what they thought of the short contraction durations, they told me to drink a lot of water, lie down, and see if they would go away in an hour because they weren’t sure if they were true labor contractions. Well, they didn’t go away. So we packed the car up and went in at 3:30am. When we got to the hospital the nurses had a hard time finding my cervix so they called Dr. Harris. Both the nurses thought I had a long way to go but Dr. Harris decided to come in and see us. After about 20 minutes of walking the halls and using the yoga ball, Dr. Harris arrived and did a short examination only to discover that I was dilated about 8cm. I laid down on the bed, he broke my water and I started pushing after about 3 more contractions (9 minutes). Without the aid of any drugs, I pushed for about 1 ½ hours and finally gave birth to Jack at 7:28am.

I am alone for a while. Brant left tonight to help his mom and dad in Arizona during her illness. This is a tense and sad time for our family and I find myself compelled to make work in Brant's absence.

Being alone always reminds me of the amazing man I am married to and how incredibly funny he is. The immediate lack of laughter in our little apartment startles me but the silence gives me some space to think and work.

In a Creative Space

To Janet

My mother in-law was recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia. While Leukemia is a commonly known type of cancer, hearing the news that Janet was ill came as a complete shock to all of our family. For weeks now she has been far from home in a hospital in Scottsdale, Arizona.

While on vacation in Arizona, Janet felt a pain in her chest that was found to be
pneumonia, which was caused by a low white blood cell count, which was caused by the Leukemia.

She is an amazing woman. Test after test and throughout the chemotherapy she has remained strong yet tender. And Tony, my father in-law, is an equally amazing man. It has been so touching to watch those two together throughout this trying time.

The last evening Brant, Jamie and I were there, Janet's hair had began to loosen and fall onto her shoulders. We all sat around her and cried with her while Tony tenderly brushed it and kept whispering how beautiful she looked. It was an incredibly emotional moment that I'll never forget.

Amber Hills Motel

The News Is Out

Bowser is now 14 weeks in the making. These photos are of the mock article Brant made to send to his folks in Arizona. They were pretty surprised. We were able to tell everybody else in person.

We call the fetus Bowser because until now, it has closely resembled the dragon creature from Super Mario Brothers. I just know it's in there with it's inadequate arms, jumping up and down while breathing fire at regular intervals.

As you can see...Brant is pretty excited.

ROUTINE DOCTOR VISIT DELIVERS SURPRISING NEWS

Dr. Scott S. Harris, M.D. says Brant and Adrianne Meckel will be the proud parents of a new baby on September 5, 2009. They were surprised to receive the news from Dr. Harris during Adrianne’s routine thyroid check-up on New Years Eve, 2008 and later discovered that they were already one month pregnant.

While smiling Adri says, “We waited until the first trimester was over to spread the news because it’s such a precarious time. Concealing the pregnancy for thirteen weeks was tricky but it passed quickly because, thankfully, my symptoms and food aversions were minimal. It’s also helpful that I haven’t begun to show” She’s excited for family and friends to be a part of the next 6 months especially after hearing the baby’s heart beat for the first time on February 25. Brant, also thrilled, says, “It’s finally time to tell Tony, Janet, Ron and Jo that they’re going to be grandparents and Jamie and Sidni that they’re going to be aunts.” He’s sure they’ll be ecstatic at the news.

Just past thirteen weeks gestation, Baby Meckel is almost 3 inches long and weighs nearly an ounce. As it continues to grow rapidly, Brant and Adri look forward to their twentieth week ultrasound to discover if it’s a boy or a girl. Either way they’re overjoyed and between the two of them many baby names abound. Names favored for boys are Louis (Lou), Charles, Holt, Jack, and Jim and names they like for girls are Soren, Kate, Claire, and Kay.

Brant and Adri look forward to your call and can’t wait to see you in person to share the excitement.

This has been an interesting few months. After officially losing my employment, I've been substitute teaching in the local school district, and while Christmas break interrupted my short sub employment, I found myself back in the classroom today. The stress of repeatedly asking a group of high school boys to quit talking and do their work really wears on me and I find myself thinking about my real dreams.

I come home and draw.

Drawing isn't my fondest medium, it's just whats possible right now. The darkroom is my natural habitat but I don't have one available to me right now. I didn't realize how fortunate I've been the last 10 years of college and grad school. I've considered these post masters years as a drawing assignment, challenging myself to create in new ways. I'm not sure if its going anywhere, but I have lots of new effigies to keep me company along the way.

The holidays have left me very drained and I hope in the next few weeks I can use the chaos of Christmas as fuel for work...weird work...needed work.

I need to bust out the video camera and start licking some glass (see Diagnosis video on my website if you really care what I'm referencing.)

The other day at 3am I awoke to a pukey dog. I spent the rest of the day being followed by Nate, my Brittany Spaniel. For some reason when he's sick he has to be right next to me and would gladly accept a piggy-back if I offered it.

One miracle I am especially proud of is that Nate pukes in the toilet. He knows to rush into the bathroom and situate himself in front of the toilet. I hold back his ears and hold him tight just as my mom did for me.

Yes, I am aware this is ridiculous.

Wow, you have beautiful teeth

In the back of my mind I knew that the story about Washington's wood teeth was only a legend. But I believe the truth about George's chompers is much more interesting.

George evidently (according to a documentary I just watched) owned several sets of false teeth in his lifetime, but none of them were made of wood. Nope. They were only ever made of ivory, animal teeth, or get this....other people's teeth. Now that doesn't sound so strange to us, a culture full of organ transplantees and transplanters, but usually we get that organ after the donor is through with it.

Not our first president...he wants your teeth...NOW. He's seen them in action and he's decided that you can do with out them.

Now George didn't ask just anybody, and he didn't expect you to donate them for the good of the cause. He purchased them from his slaves. (and I'm guessing by the number of slaves he apparently had he had a pretty great selection to choose from...at least for a while)

I love how truth is much more miserable and horrific than fiction. Thanks George.

Steampunk

Through an Etsy forum yesterday I was introduced to the term steampunk, and for me, it was love at first sight.

I love learning new terms or going new places that seem to finish a sentence I've not been able to. Steampunk and dystopia really sum up a fascination I've had for as long as I can remember. And while I'm not a big comic book reader or a science fiction junkie, I tend to gravitate to nonfictional horror between seemingly normal human beings. I feel like this sort of horror was especially omnipresent in the industrial period, (whether it was or not) during the time of the steam engine and the beginnings of photography.

Here are some clarifications that helped me.

Steampunk is a subgenre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles or analog computers; these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or a presumption of functionality.

Steampunk is often associated with cyberpunk and shares a similar fanbase and theme of rebellion, but developed as a separate movement (though both have considerable influence on each other). Apart from time period and level of technological development, the main difference between cyberpunk and steampunk is that steampunk settings usually tend to be less obviously dystopian than cyberpunk, or lack dystopian elements entirely.

Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by individual craftpersons into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical "steampunk" style, and a number of visual and musical artists have been described as steampunk.

A dystopia (from the Greek δυσ- and τόπος, alternatively, cacotopia,^[1] kakotopia, cackotopia, or anti-utopia) is the vision of a society that is the opposite of utopia. A dystopian society is one in which the conditions of life are miserable, characterized by human misery, poverty, oppression, violence, disease, and/or pollution.

Some academic circles distinguish between anti-utopia and dystopia. As in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, a dystopia does not pretend to be utopian, while an anti-utopia appears to be utopian or was intended to be so, but a fatal flaw or other factor has destroyed or twisted the intended utopian world or concept.

Okay, as of 5pm of experiment day...I'm feeling pretty low down. No sales and only a total of 13 views on all my items. I think tomorrow might need a little more promoting. But when? I think I'll try evening promoting when others are home at work. Does anybody who sells in Etsy have a day job?

Experiment in Etsy

So the past week I've spent at least 10 hours a day glued to my laptop, promoting, listing and chatting with other Etsy sellers, trying to get my work out there. And I've made lots of sales that way.

The Mother magnets have been around for a couple years, and in that time I probably sold maybe 12. But in the past 2 weeks on Etsy I've sold 35. I am very happy with this turn of events, but I'm exhausting myself and all my other duties and projects (like making art) get pushed aside when I focus entirely on promoting.

So today I'm challenging myself to avoid the forums of Etsy. I love them, and they have worked well for me. But I just want to see what happens on a day when I'm missing from them. If I get no views or sales today, I figure I'll start inching my way back in. That way, I'll spend the least amount of time necessary promoting to make the sales I feel are appropriate.

So if I have zero activity today, tomorrow I'll inch my way back in with one hour in the forums promoting. If that generates nothing, the next day will be 2. So on and so forth.

Hope I can stick to this plan.

My husband sure will be happy if I do. I think he misses me.

My sister and I became Hidden Mother fanatics (well, mostly her) after a professor of mine introduced me to them. A simple trip to the antique shop in Platte City, MO revealed that there of plenty of antique Hidden Mothers out there, waiting to be purchased. And to add to the intrigue of these images, it is not a dead phenomena! When moms and dads take their newborns to get a portrait, photographers still use the trick of hiding mom behind a drape, etc.

HIDDEN MOTHERS ARE A COMMON PHENOMENA YOU WILL FIND IN VINTAGE AND PRESENT DAY PHOTOS. LOOK FOR A SMALL CHILD THAT CANNOT KEEP STILL OR IS TOO YOUNG TO HOLD ITS OWN HEAD UP. MOTHERS ARE DISGUISED BUT NOT ACTUALLY HIDDEN FROM THE CAMERA.

And so, in honor of this awesome phenomena, I created a drawing from a tin type I purchased and have just listed it on Etsy.

Art Cubes Must Be Square
